Vol. 247 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Supplies.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if he will detail the steps taken by the Department to ensure that liquid milk supplies in towns and cities are not adulterated.

Under the provisions of the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts, 1875 to 1936, milk is sampled by local authority officers in each area at retail sale outlets for analysis by the public analyst for the area to determine whether the milk meets the minimum quality standards prescribed under the Milk (Percentage of Milkfat and Milk-solids) Regulations, 1936, and whether the milk has been adulterated in contravention of the provisions of the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts.

In 1968, 1,320 samples of milk were tested under the provisions of the food and drugs code. Out of 440 tests taken for milk delivered in Dublin County Borough, two were found to be adulterated.

Under the Milk and Dairies Acts, 5,500 milk samples were tested, the test being mainly of a bacterial nature.
