Vol. 247 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage Schemes.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will instruct the Office of Public Works to include all drains leading into the Corrib, Mask and Robe drainage scheme with a view to having all the land relieved of flooding in the catchment area.

In schemes under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, the Commissioners of Public Works include all arterial drains which can be improved at a reasonable cost. Field drains which can be dealt with by landowners themselves are not included. These considerations have been applied in determining the extent of the works which are being carried out under the Corrib-Headford Drainage Scheme and will be applied in the design of any scheme for the Corrib-Mask.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will include the Lung river in the arterial drainage scheme in view of the extreme flooding from Ballaghaderreen to Kilmovee, County Mayo and along the Mayo-Roscommon border.

The Lung River is in the Boyle Catchment for which a drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, is being prepared.

10.

asked the Minister for Finance why the Office of Public Works, in the Moy drainage scheme, have carried out drainage through several holdings of land in East Mayo and have refused to build bridges thus depriving land holders of access to portion of their land; and why in other cases bridges were built where the need did not arise.

The Commissioners of Public Works erect bridges only where necessary to restore crossing facilities removed during the course of drainage schemes where the area of land involved or other circumstances so warrant. There are some applications for bridges in East Mayo still under investigation. They will be decided on their merits.
