Vol. 247 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Sponsored Companies.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state in respect of which companies under his jurisdiction he has political responsibility for their administration.

It is not quite clear what the Deputy has in mind but I am responsible for the general policy of each of the State-sponsored bodies coming under the aegis of my Department. The board of each body is responsible in accordance with the relevant legislation for day-to-day administration. The bodies concerned are:—Aer Lingus Teoranta; Aerlínte Teoranta; Aer Rianta Teoranta; British and Irish Steampacket Co., Ltd.; Bord Fáilte Éireann; Bord na Móna; Córas Iompair Éireann; Electricity Supply Board; Irish Shipping Limited; Óstlanna Iompair Éireann Teoranta; Shannon Free Airport Development Co., Ltd. (Tourism aspect only).

Could the Minister state if he has jurisdiction over the properties held by the State companies?

The question of the sale of an individual property of a State company would be a matter of day-to-day administration for the board over which the Minister would not have any jurisdiction.

Would the Minister not consider that it would be wise for him to keep an eye on the sale of property particularly in relation to State companies whose finances are not especially sound? May I further ask the Minister if he approves of CIE selling cottages wholesale to tourists rather than housing workers?

That is a separate question.

The Minister keeps an eye on the financial situation of all the companies under his control.

Would the substitute Minister be kind enough to ask the Minister concerned to cast an eye on the sale of houses at Rosslare Harbour, County Wexford, that is going on ad lib at the moment?
