86.

asked the Taoiseach the amounts of money now required to equal 40s and 80s respectively (section 13 of the Social Welfare (Occupational Injuries) Act, 1966) in July, 1966.

87.

asked the Taoiseach the amount of money now required to equal the purchasing power of £1,200 (section 6 of the Social Welfare Act, 1965) in July, 1965.

88.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the consumer price index at 1st October, 1965, and at present; and (b) the amounts of money now required to equal (1) £100 and (2) £1,045 at 1st October, 1965.

With the permission of the Cheann Comhairle it is proposed to answer Questions Nos. 86, 87 and 88 together.

The consumer price index numbers are calculated in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. The index with base August, 1963, as 100 was 144.8 at mid-November, 1965, and 185.3 at mid-May, 1970.

Estimates of the purchasing power of money are based on these index numbers and the amounts required at mid-May, 1970, to purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as the amounts specified would have purchased at the stated periods are as follows:—
