Vol. 248 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary School.

28.

asked the Minister for Education if he will expedite a decision on the proposal submitted by Tipperary South Riding Vocational Education Committee for the provision of an extra room and appliances for Killenaule vocational school.

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the position in regard to a number of vocational schools in South Tipperary, in which enrolments are very low, is being reviewed by my Department in consultation with the County Tipperary (SR) Vocational Education Committee. The question of the proposed extension to Killenaule vocational school will be considered in that context.

Is the Minister aware of the anxiety of the vocational committee regarding the delay in supplying this essential additional accommodation and other appliances at Killenaule vocational school and, in the circumstances, would he please expedite the matter?

The Deputy is aware that we have requested the vocational committee to give serious consideration to rationalisation. As I said in my reply, the position is being reviewed by my Department in consultation with the vocational committee.

Would the Minister not agree that rationalisation should not be used to hold up much needed improvements?

Rationalisation is not being used as an excuse to hold up any improvements but it must be decided what rationalisation is necessary in that area.

Has the Minister agreed in principle to grant the extra science room at Killenaule vocational school?

I have not decided on anything yet until I receive the report.

We cannot discuss this one question all afternoon. I am calling Question No. 29.

This is a very important matter. When will the Minister be able to indicate whether the appliances will be provided?

I cannot say that until I receive the report.
