Vol. 248 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Commission Letting Receipts.

17.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the use made of moneys collected in rent on lands let by the Land Commission while in their possession.

Receipts from the lettings of lands on the hands of the Land Commission are lodged in a separate account and are applied towards outgoings such as rates, herds' wages and the appropriate interest charge in respect of the land bonds paid for the lands. Any surplus in the account is appropriated in aid of the Vote for Lands.

Is there any question of the surplus being used to defray the rents which are paid by people who ultimately get portion of these estates?

I do not think so.

Would the Minister not consider that it might be a good idea?

I would say so, yes.

Did the Minister say that part of the rent is allocated towards meeting the interest on the bonds?

Yes, most of it, in fact.
