Vol. 248 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cement Imports.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the amount of cement imported since February, 1970, to the latest date for which figures are available; the amount for the corresponding period in 1969; and the cost of same in both periods.

In the five month period ending 30th June, 1970, imports of cement amounted to 96,129 tons valued at £1,043,000. Figures for the same period in 1969 were 8,587 tons valued at £96,000.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary state the reasons for the difference in amounts of cement imported in the two periods?

The answer to the question should be self-explanatory. The answer is there.

Does this not indicate that the cement strike was exploited by some racketeers who made a handsome profit?

That is a separate question. It does not arise on this question. There are question on the price of cement further on.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary indicate whether the price of cement imported was different this year from last year?
