Vol. 248 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Castle Employees.

42.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, with regard to employment of personnel at Kilkenny Castle, (a) the number of appointments made to date; (b) the number of appointments yet to be made: (c) the duties assigned to each position; (d) the qualifications and conditions prescribed for each position; and (e) whether the positions have been advertised or are to be advertised.

Only one man is at present employed by the Commissioners of Public Works at Kilkenny Castle. He was an employee of the former owners and is engaged on general maintenance of the castle grounds. As the full staffing requirements are still being considered, I am not in a position to furnish the other information sought by the Deputy.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say when he will be in a position to give the information? Surely he can tell us whether the positions will be advertised?

It is quite clear that we will have to have at least one skilled gardener. This post will have to be advertised. For general labour work, there will be recruitment from the local employment exchange which is the usual procedure. I hope to be able to fill these positions before the park is opened on 11th September next.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary ensure that nobody who is a relative of the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries — seeing that he handed over the place in the first instance — and, further, that nobody who is a member of Fianna Fáil, will be disqualified from seeking a position? There is blatant discrimination on the opposite side of the House.

Has Deputy Davern got more cousins — in Kilkenny this time?

Are they all unemployed?
