Vol. 248 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bank Dispute.

34.

asked the Minister for Labour if, in view of the fact that the current bank dispute has continued since 30th April, 1970, causing serious economic and social dislocation and deep conflict and bitterness between the parties to the Joint Industrial Council, he will indicate his opinion on the need for a comprehensive committee of inquiry into the dispute following its termination, such an inquiry to be under the direct auspices of the Labour Court in consultation with the JIC, with a view to radically improving the climate and procedures of industrial relations in this vital public service.

As the Deputy is aware, I made a statutory request to the Labour Court to examine the present dispute between the banks and the Irish Bank Officials Association.

The court presented its report and recommendations to me yesterday and these were transmitted to the parties for acceptance.

I do not propose at present to speculate as to what possible action might or might not be taken when the dispute has ended.
