Vol. 248 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bank Interest Charges.

49.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to compel the commercial banks not to charge interest on customers' accounts which were overdrawn as at the date of the closing of the banks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no statutory control in relation to interest rates or how they should be charged. These are matters between banks and their customers. In fact, the banks have not yet stated how they propose to treat overdrafts existing from the date of the closure. If, in the event, there should be any volume of complaint I will consider what action, if any, I should take in the matter.
