Vol. 248 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Fort.

55.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state his plans in relation to the preservation and restoration of the Rath Lugh ring fort, Lismullan, County Meath.

Rath Lugh ring fort, Lismullan, County Meath is not in the care of the Commissioners of Public Works.

It is located in a State forest and the Commissioners of Public Works have discussed with the Department of Lands the measures necessary for the preservation of the monument.

Is the Minister aware that damage has been done to this ring fort by heavy machinery in the possession of the Department of Lands and would he make representations to that Department to ensure that further damage is not done and that steps are taken to preserve the fort?

The Department of Lands sold trees standing around this site and some damage was done to the monument in the course of felling. We arranged with the Department of Lands to suspend felling operations, but some trees are in danger of being blown down and it is essential that they should be removed. We have been in consultation with the Department to ensure, as far as practicable, that no damage will be done to the monument.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary contemplate taking over the ring fort itself?

Not at this stage.
