Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mountain Sheep and Lambs.

58.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what is the position in relation to mountain sheep and lambs in the EEC; and if they can compete with the fast flesh producing breeds in the member countries.

As indicated in my Department's study "Irish Agriculture and Fisheries in the EEC", a common organisation of the market for sheep and lambs has not yet been introduced in the EEC. It is considered that given the equal terms of competition with Continental and British producers, which would result from accession, the prospects for Irish producers in an enlarged Community are good. Our mountain sheep when crossed with lowland breeds have been shown to be quite suitable for the Continental trade.
