Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Pay Increases.

87.

asked the Minister for Defence when the increases in pay for the Defence Forces recently announced will be actually paid.

I hope that the increases in pay recently announced will be paid to members of the permanent Defence Force by mid-September.

Will the weekly pay be increased as of now and the arrears be paid at a later date?

The Deputy does not mean retrospection?

The retrospection can be dealt with before September. Does the Minister mean that current rates will be increased immediately? There does not seem to be any reason why everybody should continue on the old rate and then get the arrears up to September. He should look into that.

I will look into that.

Can the Minister say why he has to wait until September to pay this money? Have the Government no money or have they to wait until they collect it? Is Deputy Burke going around with a tin can?
