Vol. 248 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Bacon Supplies.

92.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will arrange to have grade A standard bacon supplied to the Defence Forces.

Grade B bacon is purchased for the Defence Forces and this is above the average quality available to the general public. It is not proposed to depart from this standard.

I do not think it would be fair to say that the standard of bacon supplied to the Army, which is grade B commercial, is very satisfactory.

How is it that this question is not down to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries? If I put it down I would be told that it was for that Minister.

There is a growing volume of opinion that the large fat pigs about which Deputies opposite were speaking last week are the ones which are finding an outlet in the Army.

The Army will not be able to afford them after the Bill last week. Would the Minister not agree that if more bacon were to be supplied it would be better than improving the quality?
