Vol. 248 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nurses Working Hours.

6.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that very irregular hours are worked by nurses in several hospitals; and that some nurses finish night duty at 8 a.m. and resume duty at 2 p.m.; and what action he proposes to take to improve working hours.

Subject to adherence to the approved total hours of service, nurses' duty rosters are determined by the matron in each hospital having regard to the varying needs of the work situation at different periods of the day and night. I have had no recent complaints that these arrangements operate unreasonably from the nurses' point of view. If the Deputy will send me particulars of the case complained of and any other instances of attendance requirements which are causing difficulty, I will pursue the matter with the authorities concerned.
