Vol. 249 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Differentials.

21.

asked the Taoiseach the latest available data on the income differential between the agricultural sector and non-agricultural sector, in each of the following countries: member states of the EEC, United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway and Ireland.

There is no direct information available regarding the income differential between the agricultural sector and the non-agricultural sector in different countries. The available data relate to (1) the percentages of gross domestic product arising in the agricultural sector and in the non-agricultural sector, (2) the percentages of civilian employment in agriculture and non-agriculture. With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving these percentages as shown in the O.E.C.D. Observer of February 1970. Any comparison between the two sets of figures must be made with reservations. In addition to possible differences in definitions, it must be kept in mind that part of the gross domestic product in agriculture may go to persons whose main occupation is non-agricultural and part of the gross domestic product in other sectors may go to persons whose main occupation is agriculture.

Following is the statement:—
