Vol. 249 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Navan Road (Dublin) Site.

3.

asked the Minister for Health what recent steps have been taken to render the site at Navan Road, Dublin, safe for youngsters playing there; what are the plans for this patch of ground for the immediate future; whether it is intended to develop the area for (a) a hospital, (b) a playground, (c) public housing and (d) private housing; and if, in the light of the FitzGerald report, he will make a statement on the matter.

The lands are at present let for grazing. The discussions about the reorganisation of the general hospital system in Dublin have not yet reached finality. Until they do and firm decisions are taken about the pattern of future hospital development it would not be possible to indicate the purpose for which this site will eventually be utilised.

As regards rendering the site safe old buildings on the site have recently been demolished and steps have been taken to improve some of the boundary walls. My attention was drawn some months ago by residents in the area to vandalism by trespassers on the site and I have had this matter brought to the special notice of my colleague, the Minister for Justice, and I understand that he has been in touch with the Garda authorities in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that this land was purchased under a compulsory purchase order for the erection of a hospital on the site and, if the planning is revised and a hospital is not built, will any compensation be paid to those from whom the land was taken?

That would be another question.
