Vol. 249 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Security Intelligence Service.

4.

asked the Taoiseach whether he considers that there should be a reorganisation of security intelligence service embodying the amalgamation of Army and police sections.

The Taoiseach has just said "No". Will he tell me the basis on which he makes that reply in view of recent events?

Because I believe that an amalgamation would reduce rather than increase the efficiency of the two services. While their roles to some extent overlap, they are by no means identical and each service has its part to play.

Is the Taoiseach aware of statements made by Ministers in his recent Government that, in fact, some of the trouble could be attributed to the fact that there appeared to be different schemes of operation for both these sections of the Intelligence Service? Surely it would now be opportune if he intends to put his house in order to see that both services are amalgamated, arising from the lesson of recent events?

I understand, Sir, that there was such a reference in the course of the recent arms trial but I do not accept it.

Is the Taoiseach aware that the previous Minister for Justice attributed a great deal of the confusion on northern policy to conflicting reports from both sections of the service? How can the Taoiseach simply dismiss this question of the need for it by simply saying it does not arise? Surely all recent events point to the dither and confusion arising from two sections of the Intelligence Service apparently at odds with one another?

I can examine these matters for myself and come to my own conclusions and the conclusion I have come to is as I stated.
