Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - World Fair Stand.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in his opinion, the stand at the recent World Fair in Japan, Expo 70, was a worthwhile investment; whether any new trade contracts have been made as a result; and whether the spread of exhibits on the stand was adequate.

I am satisfied that participation in the Japanese World Exposition at Osaka was a worthwhile investment. This was not a trade fair and the object in participating was to create a greater awareness of Ireland and of its export possibilities. In this it was very successful. In addition, the firms and organisations which participated in the Irish pavilion now have a greater understanding of the Japanese market and many of them have also been able to make valuable contacts there. As regard the final part of the Deputy's question, I consider that having regard to the limitations of space the spread of exhibits, both trade and cultural, was excellent.
