Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bullet Proof Vests Consignment.

69.

asked the Minister for Justice the outcome of investigations into the arrival in Dublin port of a consignment of bullet proof vests as stated in a recent court case.

The importation of bullet-proof vests is not a matter that comes within the ambit of the Firearms Acts and the Garda Síochána are not concerned with it.

If what the Deputy has in mind is that evidence given in a recent court case suggests that these vests may have been purchased from public moneys diverted from the purpose for which they were intended, the position is that that is a matter, in the first instance, for the Department of Finance and it would only be if any such diversion of moneys as may have occurred appeared to be a breach of the criminal law that the gardaí would become involved in relation to the consignment. So far, at all events, the investigations have not reached that stage. As the Deputy will appreciate, investigations of the handling and disposal of the moneys in question have been delayed by the bank strike.

Is there any legislation whatsoever governing the importation of bullet-proof vests?

Not that I am aware of.
