Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hydrographic Survey Vessel.

82.

asked the Minister for Defence what steps have been taken by his Department to equip the Naval Service with a vessel capable of carrying out a hydrographic survey of the waters around Ireland and to train Naval Service personnel for this vital work.

The question of establishing a hydrographic service, as part of the Naval Service, has been under consideration but the matter has not reached the point where a decision could be taken to acquire a suitable vessel or to train Naval Service personnel for the work involved.

At present priority is being given to the question of providing the Naval Service with vessels suitable for fishery protection and naval duties.
