Vol. 249 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Army Barracks.

92.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider making available to Dublin Corporation for housing purposes some of the Army barracks in the city.

All military barracks in Dublin, including that part of Griffith Barracks used by my Department, are required in full for military purposes. In the circumstances, it is not possible to make any of the barracks available to Dublin Corporation for housing purposes.

I want to thank the Minister, first of all, for his reply to me. In view of the fact that at least one barracks was built during the time of the Peninsular wars and the maintenance costs must be frightful on them, would the Minister not reconsider turning them over to Dublin Corporation? We have a very fine scheme of dwellings where in fact we could re-house some of the men in those barracks who cannot be housed at the moment?

I can see the merit of the suggestion but such a move is not contemplated at the moment.

Would the Minister not consider building one modern barracks outside Dublin and closing down those other barracks?

Would the Minister for Local Government take note of that?
