Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Amenities.

25.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement concerning the proposals to set up a municipal golf course and other sports amenity facilities in or near the Phoenix Park, Dublin.

As I indicated in reply to a similar question on 14th May, 1970, the proposal that an area of the Phoenix Park be set aside for a public golf course has been considered on a number of occasions and was fully examined as recently as 1968 when it was decided not to proceed with the proposal. However, south of the Phoenix Park there is an area of about 200 acres which was acquired in 1905 to preserve the amenities of the Phoenix Park and the River Liffey which flows though it. This area— formerly known as the Inchicore North and Longmeadows Estate — is now popularly known as the Phoenix Park Extension.

A firm of architects and landscape consultants were appointed some time ago to advise on the treatment and development of this area for recreational purposes. No definite decision has been made as to the range of sporting or recreational facilities which might be provided but the consultants have been asked to examine the feasibility of including in the area either a nine or 18 hole golf course. A preliminary report on this is expected in about two months time.
