Vol. 249 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Colour Television.

124.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the steady growth of colour television, it is his intention to set a timetable for the introduction of this service.

The introduction of colour television is primarily a matter for the Broadcasting Authority. As I stated in reply to a question on 21st May last, there are no firm plans for the introduction of colour, that is, the home production of colour programmes by RTE on a regular basis. The authority is continuing to conduct experimental test transmissions using imported material produced in colour. I understand that the Eurovision Song Contest will be transmitted in colour next April, and that from then on some outside broadcasts of major Irish events such as GAA finals and the Sweeps Derby will be in colour. This will not, however, entail any material change regarding prospects for the general introduction of colour television, which will depend, among other things, on the availability of the necessary financial resources.
