Vol. 249 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Fowl Pest Disease.

52.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in view of the serious outbreak of fowl pest disease which is widespread in Great Britain, he has taken appropriate steps to protect the fowl industry in this country.

Stringent veterinary controls are operated by my Department at all times on the importation of poultry and many other species of birds and also on poultry products as a precaution against the introduction of fowl pest and other serious diseases of poultry. The arrangements at ports and airports for the disinfection of persons from abroad who may have been in contact with possible sources of infection have been intensified. I have made an appeal to poultry keepers in this country to avoid contact with poultry in Britain and to discourage visits to their premises by persons from Britain who may have had such contact.
