Vol. 249 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Evening Courses.

33.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in the case of each university college or university in receipt of public funds, he will make representations to the relevant authorities to ensure that night class facilities are available; and if he will give the up-to-date position in respect of each university college.

With regard to the first part of the Deputy's question, I would refer him to my reply on 3rd November, 1970, to questions dealing with this matter in which I stated that in so far as it would be open to me to enter into discussions with the authorities of all universities and colleges in relation to the enrolment of evening students I would do so. In regard to the position in Dublin I added that I proposed to invite representatives of UCD and TCD to meet me for discussions. I hope to arrange for these discussions at an early date.

As regards the second part of the question, the following courses for evening students are at present provided in the university colleges:—

UCD.—Degree courses in arts and commerce; a diploma course in catechetics

UCC.—A degree course in arts commencing every four years; diploma courses in catechetics and philosophy.

UCG—A degree course in arts commencing every four years.

TCD.—A degree (B.Sc.) course in computer science.

Diploma courses in (a) computers (for engineers); (b) engineering mathematics; (c) systems analysis; (d) statistics.

Has the Minister any information about when this meeting will take place?

I cannot say because I have not arranged it yet. However, I hope to do so shortly.
