Vol. 249 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tipperary ESB Proposals.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether he is aware of grave concern among the local people at the reported proposals of the ESB to erect large pylons in the vicinity of the Nire valley, Clonmel, County Tipperary; and that it is of the utmost importance to preserve the scenic beauty of this area; if he will investigate the matter; and if he will detail the proposals that have been made and take steps to ensure against the despoliation of this area.

I am informed by the ESB that they have no plans for building any major line in the vicinity of the Nire valley.

Is the Minister not aware that already the ESB have been active in this very beautiful area in erecting various types of aerials et cetera? Would he kindly give the House an assurance that before any further work of this nature is embarked on some kind of public notice would be given so that interested persons could take steps to ensure that the natural beauty of this area will not be spoiled?

I appreciate the Deputy's concern and I will bring his views to the notice of the ESB. Indeed, they are my views as well. The ESB inform me that they have no plans for any such building at the moment in that area.
