Vol. 249 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Home Assistance Case.

20.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state, further to a reply to Question No. 16 of 12th November, 1970 on what evidence he stated that the family in question were offered accommodation at £4 10s per week.

My statement was based on information obtained from the Dublin Health Authority to the effect that the person in question was informed that a flat for renting at £4 10s a week was available and that he showed no interest in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that this was a misleading statement? No such offer was made. It was mentioned there might be flats available but, when they went, there were no flats available. This was a misleading statement, made purposely to divert attention from the fact that this family is compelled to live on £2 10s a week. The purpose was to divert attention from the real plight. No such offer was made.

I can only be guided by the Dublin Health Authority and the assistance officer informed the authority to that effect.

The assistance officer has not told the truth and I would ask for an investigation into the statement.

The total income was £9 13s a week.

The total income was £8 and £6 of that went on rent per week. May I ask the Minister if he had this matter investigated?

It has been fully investigated through the corporation and the home assistance officer.

It has not been investigated.

The Deputy will resume his seat. He may not monopolise Question Time. I am calling Question No. 21.

I am asking the Minister if he will take this a stage further.

I will have to bring order into this and I shall obey the Chair.
