Vol. 249 No. 11

Ceisteanna — Questions Oral Answers. - Mayo Seawater Canal.

64.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Local Government if any progress has been made in recent months by Mayo County Council in connection with the proposal for the provision of a drawbridge over the seawater canal, Belmullet, County Mayo.

Since my reply to the Deputy's question of 30th July last, I have received and considered a copy of the opinion furnished by the council's law agent on the council's responsibility for the bridge, and on 26th October my Department informed the council that the cost of a fixed bridge could be met from their annual county road improvement grant. If the council want to provide a swing bridge at Belmullet they are free to do so but the extra cost will have to be met from the council's own resources or from a source other than the Road Fund.

I have no information as to what action has been taken by Mayo County Council since then. It is a matter for them to decide on the type of bridge which they propose to provide and to prepare the necessary documents.
