The number of schools closed in County Donegal due to amalgamation since 1965 is 98. There are 40 schools in County Donegal scheduled for replacement either because of their structural condition or for educational reasons.
As the vast majority of these are small schools and will be replaced by central schools their replacement will involve the building of 18 new schools, the arrangements for the provision of which are at various stages.
