Vol. 249 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growth Centres.

31.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the appointment of regional directors of the IDA, any decision has yet been reached on the Buchanan Report and the siting of growth centres.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply I gave to Question No. 73 on the 12th of this month about the Buchanan Report. The matter is being dealt with on the lines stated in that reply and the position is not changed by the appointments referred to.

Has the Minister any comment to make on the situation whereby these officers are appointed in regional areas while the Government have not yet made up their minds about the actual growth centres as suggested in the Buchanan Report? Would the Minister not consider it strange that this should be the situation?

The Government are awaiting the reports from the nine regions and no further major decision will be reached until these reports are available to the Government.

Question No. 32.

Is the Minister saying that officers appointed under these regional directors have been given the jobs without the Government having any idea of where the growth centres will be eventually?

That is a separate question.

It is a very important question.

That may be so, but it is a separate question.

If the Deputy wishes to ask a question about the functions of the IDA personnel, it should be directed to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
