Vol. 249 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questious. Oral Answers. - Middle East Peace Keeping Force.

34.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state from what source the money for payment of salary and other expenses of members of the Irish Army who are on United Nations duty in the Middle East is provided.

The United Nations pay these officers in the Middle East a subsistence allowance of 12.50 US dollars per day and a clothing allowance of 200 US dollars per annum. Their travelling costs are also borne by the United Nations. The cost of normal pay and allowances and any extra and extraordinary expenditure arising out of the provision of officers for this mission, are borne by the State.

How much has this amounted to?

I have not the figures, offhand. If the Deputy would like the breakdown of the 12.50 US dollars per day it would be equivalent to £5 4s. The 200 US dollars per annum clothing allowance would be approximately £83.

Probably what the questioner had in mind was money coming from our Exchequer rather than from the United Nations.

It is minimal.
