Vol. 250 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Registration Council.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if he proposes to introduce amending legislation revising the powers of the Medical Registration Council following similar legislation recently announced for the General Medical Council in Britain.

5.

asked the Minister for Health if he will state the functions of the Medical Registration Council.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

On the presumption that the Deputy is referring to the provisions of the British Medical Act, 1969, it is my intention to sponsor legislation in broad terms along the lines of the provisions of that Act.

I might say that this action has been requested by the Medical Registration Council. Preliminary consultation on this matter has already taken place and more detailed consultation will follow before drafting of the legislation is proceeded with.

The functions of the Medical Registration Council are set out in detail in the Medical Practitioners Acts, 1927 to 1961, and in general could be said to make the council the registration, controlling and disciplinary body for the medical profession.

Could the Minister say when these proposals will come before the House?

I am unable to state that because we are in negotiation with the Irish Medical Association and the Irish Medical Union on some of the matters contained in the proposals.

Would it be within the next six months?

I would hope so but I could not guarantee it.
