asked the Minister for Labour the total number of workers made redundant in each of the past four years.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.
The total number of notices of dismissal on redundancy issued under the Redundancy Payments Act, in the years 1968 and 1969 and in the first eleven months of 1970 were as follows :
1968 |
3,863 |
1969 |
3,696 |
1970 |
3,501 |
(1st January to 30th November)
As the Redundancy Payments Act did not come into operation until 1st January, 1968, particulars of redundancies before that date are not available in my Department.
Can the Minister give us any indication of the amount of money currently in the redundancy fund?
I would not attempt to give a figure. I am sure the Deputy is aware that there was an overspill in the fund which has enabled us to amend the Act. The actual draft of the Bill was cleared by the Government recently and will be circulated soon.
Is the figure approximately £2 million?
I will not give an approximate figure. If the Deputy puts down a question I will tell him the exact figure.
Will the amending legislation regarding redundancy be introduced soon?
Yes. I have the draft Bill ready.
I thank the Minister.
It is the understanding of the Chair that the House has agreed to take questions up to 5 o'clock.
