Vol. 250 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Servants Retiring Age.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will consider allowing State servants, who have served the State since 1922, to carry on their jobs until the age of 70, if fit to do so, without having to make an annual application for an extension of service.

The present arrangements provide for an annual review where an officer is exceptionally retained beyond the normal retiring age. This is a reasonable requirement and I do not see any good ground for dispensing with it.

Would the Minister not agree if an officer is in good health and able to continue with his work, it would be better to make the age 70 years rather than make it necessary for the officer concerned to apply each year to go through the rigmarole that is required of those people?

I think the requirement is a reasonable one.

Can the Minister state why he considers it reasonable?

I think it is self-evident.

I do not agree. I may be obtuse and perhaps the Minister will explain the position.

To have such a requirement in respect of a person who is retained beyond the normal retiring age seems to be self-evident and reasonable.

I cannot agree with the Minister.
