Vol. 251 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closure of Kerry Factory.

37.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the CWS Bacon Factory, Tralee, County Kerry which has been operating for the past 70 years closed down last week thus depriving approximately 100 employees of employment, some of whom had 30 to 40 years service with the factory; and, if so, if he has brought this very serious position for the workers concerned and the town of Tralee in general before An Comhairle Oiliúna and the Industrial Development Authority so that those bodies may be enabled to pursue the possibility of retraining the workers affected by the closure of the factory and of promoting a new industry in Tralee to provide other employment opportunities.

38.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the serious aggravation of the unemployment problem in Tralee, County Kerry, following the closing of the CWS Bacon Factory, he will detail the steps being taken by his Departmen to provide alternative employment.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 38 together. The Industrial Development Authority and An Chomhairle Oiliúna are at present examining the position to see what can be done to provide alternative employment.
