Vol. 251 No. 4
asked the Taoiseach the number of unemployed in Waterford city at the beginning of January, 1970, and the beginning of January, 1971; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

asked the Taoiseach the number of unemployed in County Waterford at the beginning of January, 1970, and the beginning of January, 1971; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together.
The following are particulars of registered unemployment, as required:
In Waterford County Borough there were 727 unemployed persons on the 2nd January, 1970 and 703 on the 1st January, 1971; a decrease of 24.
In Waterford County (excluding the County Borough), there were 592 unemployed persons on the 2nd January, 1970 and 638 on the 1st January, 1971; an increase of 46.
As the changes are relatively small and are spread over a number of local offices, they cannot be assigned to any particular cause.
So it does not make any difference if there are 22 more people unemployed in Waterford?
It makes a great difference.
The Parliamentary Secretary said it did not.
I did not say anything of the kind. The Deputy could not have been listening to the answer. Is the Deputy seriously suggesting I made that statement?
I am suggesting the Parliamentary Secretary said it did not matter that 22 more people were unemployed.
I should like to put it on the record of the House that I did not make any such suggestion.
