Vol. 251 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School.

29.

asked the Minister for Education when a secondary school will be provided to service the combined area of Kilmore, Cromcastle and Bonnybrook housing estate, Dublin plus 1,000 privately built houses recently constructed there.

The post-primary educational needs of these areas are already being met by four secondary schools and one vocational school. Two of the secondary schools and the vocational school are in the initial stages of development but have been planned and will be built in stages to meet the growing requirements of the area.

Would the Minister give the dates on which these are due? Is he aware that there are 4,600 children in this area, 3,400 at school at the moment and 1,200 coming up for education in the near future; that the primary schools cater for only 1,900 children and that there are 1,150 going outside the area to 21 different schools? When will these schools be available? I did not get a date for any one of them.

As I informed the Deputy, some of these schools are there already, some of them are being added to and there will be some new ones. In regard to secondary schools, vocational schools, post-primary education generally, the needs of the area are being met at the moment and plans have been made to build further schools and additions to meet the growing requirements of the area.

Is the Minister aware that there are only 50 places in St. David's School and that there are 400 children seeking entrance? They have to go into town or go across to Sandymount for a secondary education. There is no new secondary school there and there is none in line as far as I can see.

I have already informed the Deputy that there are secondary and vocational schools there——

They are full.

——and that there are additions being built and that we are meeting the requirements in the area.
