asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the number of fully built-up vehicles imported by type of vehicle and country of origin in the calendar year 1970 and (b) the number of vehicles by type of vehicle assembled locally in each of the years 1965 to 1970.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report statements giving the data requested by the Deputy in so far as they are available at present.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary please give the figures for 1965 and 1970?

They are not broken down in that fashion in my comprehensive list. However, I would refer the leader of the Labour Party to the Official Report dated 11th February, Volume 251, column 1299, where the Minister for Industry and Commerce on the Adjournment debate quoted the total number of vehicles assembled in the Irish car assembly industry in 1965 as 49,709 and in 1970 as 52,976.
