Vol. 251 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Pensions.

13.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the amount at present in the CIE pension fund; the amount payable to pensioners who retired from 1966 onwards; and if he will investigate the possibility of increasing this amount.

The amount standing to the credit of the funds of the wages grade pension schemes at 31st December, 1969, was £6,542,193. The liabilities of the funds at that date were over £14 million.

I have had discussions with CIE pensioners associations about the position of certain pensioners who retired since 23rd February, 1968. I am not yet in a position to be able to make a statement in the matter but I hope to be able to do so at an early date.

The information about the amount payable to pensioners who retired from 1966 onwards is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

NOTE: Pensioners are also eligible for unemployment benefit or old age pension. Thus incomes of pensioners range from £7.00 to £9.50 a week in the case of a single man and from £10.12½ to £12.62½ a week for a married man.

Could the Minister, having met the CIE pensioners, state whether he will recommend an increase for the 1966 CIE pensioners?

I have indicated that this was the purpose of the meeting. We are at the moment working out the details and I hope to have them very shortly.

Details for an increase?

Of course. I would not meet them otherwise.
