Vol. 252 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - USA Mills Bill.

47.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the Government have studied the Mills Bill, at present being considered in the USA, and its effects on Ireland's request for special consideration of specific items in relation to the application for membership of the EEC; and what sensitive items of Irish exports will be affected by the Bill as drafted at present.

The provisions of the Mills Bill have been studied in my Department. The Bill is of no relevance to Ireland's request for special consideration in respect of certain items in our EEC negotiations. The main emphasis in the Bill is on textiles and footwear although it also contains provisions whereby import restrictions might be imposed by the USA on other products, but only after inquiries had been carried out by the US Tariff Commission.
