Vol. 252 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Garda Traffic Duty.

50.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí employed on traffic duty in Dublin for the week commencing 22nd February, 1971; and whether all of them were from city stations.

All the members of the force engaged on traffic duty in Dublin for the week commencing 22nd February were from stations in Dublin city and Dún Laoghaire.

In addition to the members who are normally engaged full-time on the enforcement of the Road Traffic Acts in Dublin, an extra 32 sergeants and 231 gardaí, who would otherwise be off duty, were assigned to traffic duty in the city during the week.

Would the Minister care to hazard a guess as to how the ordinary business of the gardaí was carried on during this period?

As I told the Deputy in my reply, all of the 32 sergeants and the 231 gardaí were off duty and were brought on on overtime, so that the ordinary working of the force continued.

Is the Minister sure they will be paid overtime?

They will be paid if it is overtime which is appropriate for payment. A lot of the overtime is compensated for——

The gardaí have not got the time off to which they were entitled following the reduction in work. They are not going to be promised more time off.

No. It is working in accordance with the recommendations and the Deputy should read the report.

The Minister should check on the way they are being treated.
