Vol. 252 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Swimming Pools.

66.

andMr. Sherwin asked the Minister for Local Government whether the borrowing of capital by Dublin Corporation will be sanctioned to enable more swimming pools to be provided in Dublin with particular reference to Ballyfermot.

I have approved in principle of the proposal by Dublin Corporation to borrow £100,000 towards the cost of providing two further swimming pools in the city. I understand that one of the pools will be provided in Ballyfermot and the second pool in either Finglas or Cabra, as decided by the corporation.

May I ask the Minister why it is that a swimming pool for Rathmines is not included although this was given priority by the city manager? What influence has been used to have the pools provided in the two areas mentioned?

If the Deputy wants that information he will have to ask Dublin Corporation who decide on priorities in relation to which area in Dublin gets the next swimming pool. So far as I remember, the application for a pool in the Rathmines area has not been pursued very actively down through the years. The Deputy has mentioned this before and has said that this is being asked for more than 30 years——

Fifty years.

——but if the Deputy is so interested he should be more active in promoting the provision of swimming pools between the times I stand up here to answer questions about swimming pools. He has done nothing about the provision of the Rathmines swimming pool since he last asked a question about it here.

That is not true because the Rathmines branch of the Labour Party did see the city manager about it and got a promise from him.

The corporation decide the priorities.

The city manager decides.

They are decided by the Commissioner.

If the Minister is saying that the city manager did not tell the truth, it is not very fair of him to do so since the man is not here to defend himself.
