Vol. 252 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Membership of EEC.

13.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in relation to the Government's White Paper on Membership of the European Communities, Implications for Ireland (April, 1970) which estimated the cost of abolishing sex differentiation in pay in the public sector to comply with the Rome Treaty provision at £1¼ million per annum, any revised estimate is available of this cost.

The figure of £1¼ million a year represented the best estimate that could be made at the time in the absence of detailed costings for the different areas of the public sector. Detailed up-to-date figures are at present being prepared at the request of the Commission on the Status of Women, for inclusion in their report on the cost of granting equal pay in the Exchequer-aid groups and the local service. It is hoped that these figures will be available shortly.
