The information requested by the Deputy, which presumably relates to incomes as assessed for tax purposes, is not available. However, on the basis of the latest available statistics the number of persons assessed in the years 1968-69 and 1969-70 to sur-tax, whose total incomes as defined for purposes of that tax exceeded £5,000, were 2,735 and 3,025 respectively. The income assessable to surtax in each of these years would to a great extent have arisen in the year preceding the particular year of assessment.
