Vol. 252 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Beef Export Guarantee Scheme.

40.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries how the surplus in the year 1970-71 of the amount collected by means of the farthing per £1 levy under the Beef Export Guarantee Scheme over the amount paid to CBF was disposed of.

The question of a levy collection or a surplus does not arise as such. The position is that when CBF was established early in 1969 the Government provided for its financing by an abatement of ¼d per lb in the level of carcase beef export support payments here as compared with the level of deficiency payments made on fat cattle in Britain. It is expected that the cumulative amount represented by this abatement will have been paid to CBF within the next year or so.

Would the Minister state if the full amount collected in 1970-71 was transferred to CBF during that year or will the amount be transferred within the next month?

Had the Deputy listened to the end of my reply he would know that I stated that it is expected that the cumulative amount represented by this abatement will have been paid to CBF within the next year or so.
