Vol. 252 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Swimming Pool.

48.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date on which he received a request from the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Constituency Council of the Labour Party to receive a deputation to discuss the decision of Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation relating to the siting of the council's proposed swimming pool; and if it is his intention to receive this deputation.

I received a request to receive this deputation on 9th March last. In view of the number of representations I have received against siting the pool at Williamstown, as proposed by Dún Laoghaire Corporation, I have asked that body to consider locating the pool on a more central site. In the circumstances I have suggested to the constituency council that their views about the location of the pool should be addressed in the first instance to the corporation.

I did not get the full gist of the Minister's reply but I wonder if he could tell me when he conveyed this opinion to Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation?

The 13th March.

In view of the fact that the Minister will be making available very substantial funds to Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation in connection with this swimming pool— we would hope the amount would be in the region of £50,000——

Pardon; we are discussing the siting of a swimming pool. Therefore, I should think that the Deputy's question is highly irrelevant at this stage.

Could the Minister inform me as to the cost of the swimming pool, as submitted by Dublin County Council?

Sin ceist eile ar fad. If Dún Laoghaire Borough Corporation want me to consider seriously a proposal for the erection of a swimming pool in that area, they should submit a site that is acceptable to me and one that is also acceptable to the general community in the area because it is evident from the many representations that I have received that the Williamstown site is not acceptable.

Thank you very much.

asked the Minister for Local Government the up-to-date position regarding the proposal to have a swimming pool constructed at Ballina, County Mayo.

I recently sanctioned the raising of a loan of £4,000 by Ballina Urban District Council and a loan of £8,000 by Mayo County Council for the purpose of making contributions to the local committee in Ballina towards the provision of a swimming pool.

I understand that tenders for building the pool are under examination by the committee's architect.
