asked the Minister for Finance if he will state with reference to his reply of 23rd February last, the number of candidates for posts as reporter serving the Houses of the Oireachtas in 1967, 1968 and 1969; the reasons why it was deemed that no candidates were entitled to succeed in 1967 or 1968; why no competition took place in 1970; the salaries offered for the posts in 1967, 1968 and 1969; and the present salaries attaching to the posts.

The particulars sought by the Deputy are set out in a statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, will be published in the Official Report.
Following is the statement:
1. The number of applicants was one in 1967, three in 1968 and 18 in 1969.
2. None of the applicants in 1967 and 1968 reached the required standard in the verbatim reporting test.
3. The Ceann Comhairle did not propose the holding of a competition in 1970.
4. The salaries offered for the posts in the years mentioned were between the following ranges—
