Vol. 253 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Death.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement concerning the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Anthony Henderson in Laois on Sunday, 4th April, 1971.

The investigation of the circumstances of a violent death is a function of a coroner's inquest. The inquest in this case at present stands adjourned on the basis that the coroner did not regard the available evidence as sufficient. If the Garda secure additional evidence that may enable the inquest to be resumed, they will of course report it to the coroner unless the evidence is such as to warrant the institution of criminal proceedings, in which case the evidence will be presented in open court in those proceedings.

May I ask the Minister if he has any observations to make on the various statements made surrounding the circumstances of this death?

No, I have no observations to make.
