Vol. 253 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electrical Trade.

30.

asked the Minister for Labour if his Department have received representations from the electrical trade in Cork regarding the fact that apprentice electricians were unwilling to do certain lesser tasks in the trade e.g. rewinding; and if, in view of the fact that the issue has been the subject of correspondence for three years, he will now agree to permitting semi-skilled labour to perform such tasks.

The problem mentioned in the Deputy's question is confined to a particular firm.

The employment of sem-skilled workers on the tasks referred to in the question is a matter for negotiation between the employer and the trade unions concerned and it is not necessary to seek the agreement of the Minister or of AnCO to whatever arrangements may be negotiated. On a request from the firm, AnCO will be prepared, however, to advise on possible solutions to the problem.
